Manmadhan Ambu - Target specific

[Thursday, December 02, 2010]‘Manmadhan Ambu’ starring Kamal, Trisha, Madhavan, Sangeetha and others is going to be the last big release of 2010. There may be more surprises in the cast when the film releases in December. The movie is expected t be a modern hip romantic comedy with European feel.

The much-expected audio of the film directed by KS Ravikumar was released on November 20 at The MAX Pavilion, Singapore Expo, in Singapore.

The audio launch was very dramatic with Kamal and Trisha performing on stage, Maddy break down after listening to Kamal singing and more.

The music of the film is by Devi Sri Prasad who is doing full music in a Kamal film for the first time. The album has 7 tracks and it is Kamal all the way. Kamal has penned five songs and sung four of them.

For the first time Trisha has recorded her voice for a full length song. The album has many surprises and a sheer variety.

1. Dhagudu Dhattham...

Singer: Kamal Haasan

Lyricist: Kamal Haasan

A jazzy beginning transforms into a full blown gana in the voice of Kamal Haasan. Written by Kamal himself, the song has a pro-downtrodden philosophy in it. Musically a no major attempts made by DSP except a gana kuthu using western instruments like guitars and trumpets. The arrangements are simple as Kamal’s voice does everything the song requires.

2. Who's the hero...

Singer: Andrea Jeremiah

Lyricist: Kamal Haasan

If at all there can be a heroism song (often called ‘hero intro’ song in Tamil cinema) in rock ‘n’ roll format then it is this. The hero will become a Zorro to shred his enemies into bits is the message. A foot tapping number for all the seasons. Typical instruments, electric guitar, string bass, drums, piano, saxophone and all others are electrifying. , Andrea is excellent and shoulders this song.

3. Neela Vaanam...

Singer: Kamal Haasan

Lyricist: Kamal Haasan

A sober violin and piano welcomes you into the song that becomes a grand pathos. The female backup and violin interludes are imposing. Kamal’s radical thoughts are strewn thrown out. Lines like the man singing ‘Ennai pol oru penn kuzhathai, unnai pol oru aan kuzhanthai’ are very Kamalish. Emotions run high in many places and the extended high octaves are easily handled by Kamal. DSP has played to the cans and can’ts of Kamal. Surely a different kind of pathos untried before. Pick of the pack.

4. Oyyale...

Singer: Mukesh, Suchitra

Lyricist: Viveka

“Oyyale” is a regular Devi Sri Prasad kuthu. The only folksy feel in an album which is breezily western through out otherwise. Viveka’s lyric is not exceptional and so are the vocals of Mukesh and Suchita. Must be an item song on Trisha who plays an actress.

5. Kamal Kavidhai...

Singer: Kamal Haasan, Trisha

Lyricist: Kamal Haasan

Much hyped number even before the official release. A poetic discussion on man-woman relationships between Kamal and Trisha. In ‘vasana kavithai’ style which is a beauty limited to Tamil language only.

This will sound bit complex for many and hard hitting for some. Revolutionary Kamal thoughts are seen even in this. Only Trisha’s Tamil diction could have been better. She may have to take more time to try dubbing for her in movies.

6. Theme of Manmadhan Ambu

Again violin is the main course here. A short, sweet Use of chorus in musical format is impressive and very European. Suits the movie image.

7. Manmadhan Ambu

Singer: Devi Sri Prasad

Lyricist: Kamal Haasan

Heavily laden with instruments which is DSP style. A good fusion work where the lyric is secondary. Thematic song which must have been played many times in the film. DSP’s voice and Jamal’s words are naughty.

Overall, this film must have been a different experience for DSP who all along dwelled in fast rhythmic world. The whole album has an up market western jazz feel except for that one song. For a story that happens in Europe, DSP has done it right, we guess.

Kamal has tried all he could. In the end his experiments have surly satisfied the fans.
