Disney was irked with gay Captain Jack Sparrow: Johnny Depp

[Sunday, December 05, 2010]
Actor Johnny Depp has said that the bosses in Walt Disney were shocked when he joked with them, saying Captain Jack Sparrow's character was actually gay. The character, which has become synonymous with the Pirates of the Caribbean movie series, is one of the most remembered roles played by Depp. Captain Jack Sparrow was initially scripted to be a supporting character in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but was later changed as a main character after it gained huge popularity.

Screen writers Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio had created the careless character based on Bugs Bunny. Depp played the character with a tipsy light hearted mannerism during the audition. When the men from Disney enquired whether he was playing the character as a drunk man, Depp joked and said he was playing a gay guy. Depp had drawn inspiration from Rolling stones guitarist Keith Richards for the body language of Jack Sparrow. Depp will appear again as Captain Jack Sparrow in the fourth instalment of Pirates of the Caribbean, titled Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides which will hit screens on May, 2011.
