Goodbye Cheeta: Tarzan's sidekick – or fraud of the jungle?

Cinemimi [Wednesday, December 28, 2011] Hollywood mourns Cheeta the chimpanzee. But could a chimp have lived to the age of 80?

He had a difficult relationship with several of his Hollywood co-stars, biting some of them and throwing his own faeces at others. But 1930s cinema audiences were thrilled by Cheeta the chimpanzee, the sidekick to Johnny Weissmuller's Tarzan, whose death on Christmas Eve was announced yesterday.

The Suncoast Primate Sanctuary in Florida, where he was enjoying his retirement, reported "with great sadness" that Cheeta died from kidney failure at the age of 80.

The community had "lost a dear friend and family member", it added.

The chimp starred in Tarzan and His Mate in 1932 and Tarzan the Ape Man, two years later. He appeared alongside former Olympic swimmer Weissmuller, who died in 1984, and Maureen O'Sullivan, mother of Mia Farrow, who died in 1998.

However, doubt was immediately cast on whether he was in fact Cheeta the film star, with primate specialists pointing out that chimps held in captivity rarely live beyond 50.

Dr Alison Cronin, director of Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre in Dorset, said: "There is an awful lot of speculation about Cheeta and whether it is the right one. I don't believe it." She said most chimps in the wild only lived into their 30s. "When they get old they really look it. The one I saw did not look 80." Others speculated that several different chimps were used in the 1930s films.

Suncoast's outreach director Debbie Cobb said Cheeta had loved finger painting and American football, enjoyed making people laugh and was "very in tune to human feelings". The ape arrived at the sanctuary in about 1960, coming from Weissmuller's estate, Ms Cobb claimed. "He was very compassionate. He could tell if I was having a good day or a bad day. He was always trying to get me to laugh if he thought I was having a bad day," she told the Tampa Tribune.

However, sanctuary volunteer Ron Priest said that when he did not like somebody or something "he would pick up some poop and throw it at them", adding: "He could get you at 30 feet, with bars in between."

Mia Farrow wrote on Twitter that her mother had invariably referred to Cheeta as "that bastard" due to his habit of biting her.

Whether this was the real Cheeta or not, tributes to the primate poured in yesterday. John Mackay said: "You always made us laugh at your antics and be sad when you were sad. You will live forever in our hearts." Helene from Virginia said she "grew up watching the Tarzan movies with Cheeta. Cheeta made all us children smile and laugh."

Yet there is a dark side to using chimps in entertainment. Dr Cronin said that the fame of Cheeta and Michael Jackson's chimp Bubbles had fuelled a world smuggling trade in the animals.

"Almost all chimps in Monkey World have been rescued from some form of entertainment," she said.

Me Cheeta: In his 'own' words

In 2008 James Lever wrote Me Cheeta, the ape's "autobiography" and a behind-the-scenes romp through Hollywood's Golden Age:

On Johnny Weissmuller "I remember we were both up for the role of Terry in On the Waterfront and the casting director told Johnny he was wasting his time. I got a callback but it came to nothing."

On Maureen O'Sullivan "She couldn't even act affection for animals, although, to be wholly honest and give the harmless old trout her due, it was probably just me she disliked."

On fame "Picture a human and a chimpanzee facing each other in awkward silence... the faint inanity of the interaction stealing over both of them. That's what fame is."

'Rajapattai' - User Review

Cinemimi [Saturday, December 24, 2011]

Chiyaan Vikram has come out with an out and out commercial entertainer, along with Suseenthiran and Deeksha Seth. 'Rajapattai', saw a big worldwide release yesterday.

Warning: Spoilers Alert

The following article is by a user and is not IndiaGlitz's take towards anyone or anything. Written by Prabhu from Canada

'Rajapattai' - User Review

Land mafia lobes mixed with Indian cinema spices to smell like the usual curry but, tastes a little different for the last few scoops.

Anal Murugan the protagonist, is an aspiring gym boy (cinema stunt double), dreaming of making it big as villain in Tamil cinema. But fate turns him into the villain for the state's largest land mafia headed by Akka aka Kutti Rani backed by her brainy associate Vaapa.

The narration doesn't retard from its normal pace during any reel, but the songs definitely play its part in doing so. First 60 minutes is the often traveled path, with fighters flying, comedians crying, hero kicking, heroine singing, and all other circus trends. The following 70 odd minutes will entertain the audience if they were less interested in what happened so far.

Vikram is always at his best. His body language for all those petty roles is graceful and shows how good an actor he is (especially the 2nd half investigation block). But with his gym boy physique, his muscles struggle a lot to be in sync with fellow dancers.

2 villains, thankfully only one flaunts his decibel skills that too for very few minutes. The other villain is more of looks, but her costume and performance creates more of a serial soap star impression rather than a vicious female politician. Oh, I forgot there is another petty villain who alters his ways later. Naturally both the villains reach heaven before we step out of the hall.

Nothing much to say about the lead lady, as she was busy walking through deserts for 2 duets and throwing her charm in few other scenes. Comedy is very good in this movie, doesn't mock anybody and above all nobody is physically abused. Thambhi Ramaiyya has done his part well along with few more actors.

Looks like Singeetham Sir is having all the fun after so many years in cinema. There are lots of body builders in the movie who look cute and loveable when they are not in action. Songs are a big let down for the movie along with the BGM. Had the narration been sleeker, Rajapattai would have been a decent entertainer.

Title cards warn you of some heavy metal clanging and high decibel "yeiiiiiii" (which can be heard till you get bored). If 'Naan Mahaan Alla' is the reason for you to book the ticket for Rajapattai, the risk is up to you.

Watch it if you are in for a mild paced entertainer with not many twists, but good performances and better comedy.

Captain's 'Oomai Vizhigal' to be remade?

Cinemimi[Saturday, December 24, 2011]
There was a buzz in Kollywood that director Vincent Selva, who made films like 'Priyamudan', 'Youth' (both Vijay starrers) and 'Iraniyan', will soon remake cult thriller 'Oomai Vizhigal', which had Vijayakanth in the lead role.

However, the filmmaker is quick to deny it. "I am going to direct a fresh script and I felt that the title Oomai Vizhigal will be apt for it. When I approached Aabavanan (the man behind the original version) with the idea, he was unable to give me permission to use the title due to unavoidable reasons."

Selva, who is mentor to top filmmakers like Mysskin, adds: "Hence I am planning to start the movie under the new title Moongil Vizhigal. It will be a thriller with commercial aspects. The project will hit the floors very soon."

Selva, while saying that Sarath Kumar will be approached for a crucial role, gives details that fresher Karthik is the lead protagonist, while two new girls from Pune and Kerala play the female leads. Santhanam and Thambi Ramaiah will also be there.

Kamal to be directed by Lingusamy - Shankar?

Cinemimi [Friday, December 23, 2011]

The Kollywood industry is abuzz with a rumor that director Lingusamy and director Shankar are silently planning to make a movie together. We hear the directors are keen to cast Kamal Haasan as their hero in this venture.

The project is touted to be in its initial stages. Lingusamy and Shankar had come together recently for the former's film 'Vettai's music release event. It is reported that Shankar has written a script. Director Lingusamy who came across this script seems to have liked it, according to reports, and has also got the green signal to direct the same.

Now both the directors' unanimous choice happens to be to book Kamal Haasan for the lead role, but the Ulaganayagan is busy with his upcoming magnum opus 'Viswaroopam.' Once this film is wrapped up the actor will set some time aside to hear the directors' out before deciding on his availability for this project, sources reveal.

Now if this materializes, the movie buffs of Tamil Nadu will get to experience one brilliant film, what with Lingusamy's fast-paced story telling, Shankar's elegance and as the icing on the cake Kamal's classic act! We will get back with more on this soon.

Ajith's next with Vishnuvardhan or Shiva?

Cinemimi[Thursday, December 22, 2011]

Now that the shooting of 'Billa 2' is over but for some patch work which will be completed in a few days, 'Thala' Ajith is gearing up to start his next. It will be directed by Vishnuvardhan.

"Actually Ajith has two projects in his hands. One to be helmed by Vishnuvardhan and the other by Siruthai fame Shiva. But Ajith chose Vishnuvardhan since it is a long due to work with him," circles close to the 'Thala' say.

They add: "It was Vishnuvardhan who was to direct Billa 2. But he missed it due to unavoidable reasons. At that time, Ajith promised Vishnu that he would work with him soon. The actor is honouring it now."

Another reason is said to be Shiva being busy with a Telugu film starring Ravi Teja and Taapsee Pannu in lead roles. "The Ajith-Shiva venture will start after May 2012," sources say. It will be produced by Vijaya Productions to mark the centenary of its founder Nagi Reddy.

Cinemimi[Thursday, December 22, 2011] KV Anand directed 'Ko' amassed huge crowd at the theatres and took the lead actors acting career to the next level. Now the film is all set to be made in Bollywood as well. While it was earlier rumored that KV Anand might direct the Hindi version too and will debut into Bollywood as director, recent developments reveal that the production house of 'Ko' has roped in Prakash Jha to direct this political thriller.

Prakash Jha who has already become a hit, directing political films in Bollywood (read Rajneethi and Aarakshan) we hear is all set to zoom his camera for this next venture. While the director has confirmed his berth to helm this project all the other details like the cast and crew members are being worked out.

The Tamil version had Jiiva as the lead actor, as a go-getter photo journalist and also saw Karthika debuting as the heroine in Tamil with this film. The film's music too went on to become chartbusters.

We'll have to wait to know if the magic will be repeated in Hindi as well...

Venkat Prabhu: I am overwhelmed, working on buddy cop genre

Venkat PrabhuCinemimi[Thursday, December 08, 2011]
It's a super success for Venkat Prabhu today, his 'Mankatha' has seen a successful 100 day run at the box office.

'Mankatha' also marks the 50th film of Thala Ajith and the expectations were sky rocketing on this film even as it went on floors and the weightage on Venkat Prabhu was high from day 1 but he has satisfied Thala fans and movie goers with this movie and has managed to deliver a sleekly packed entertainer.

Speaking to IG, Venkat Prabhu says, "I am very, very happy that the film is still running in many suburbs. I am only happier that I was able to live up to the expectations from Thala fans, in fact we didn't have too much ads or any promo activity, but the film turned out to be a promo for itself, wishes are still pouring in from Thala fans".

In fact, all his four offerings, 'Chennai 28', 'Saroja', 'Goa' and now 'Mankatha' have seen a 100 day run at the BO!

So what was the reaction from Thala? "He messaged and wished me and I also sent him wishes via a SMS, since he is in Georgia for Billa 2 shoot. After he comes back we'll meet him".

On his next project Venkat says, "I have signed a bilingual with Studio Green, I am still penning the script. After penning the script I will narrate it to Suriya who is currently busy with Maatraan. It's a double hero project. It will be a buddy cop film loaded with action and comedy". He will narrate it to Ravi Teja as well after penning the script.

Buddy cop films are usually plots where two men of different preferences are forced to work together to solve a crime case. Popular examples are 'Bad Boys' and 'Rush Hour'.

After delivering a super action entertainer with Thala, it looks like Venkat Prabhu wants to do something even more different with his next venture...
